Brigadier General A.N.M. Nooruzzaman was a military officer and sector commander of the Liberation War. He served as sector commander of Sector 3 comprising 10 sub-sectors. He was awarded the title'Veer Uttam'by the Government of Bangladesh for his unequal bravery in the War of Independence. According to the Gazette of 1973, his gallantry number 10.
Birth and education
AnM Nooruzzaman was born in December 1938 in Saidabad village under Raipura thana in Narsingdi district. Father's name is Abu Ahmed and his mother's name is Lutfunnecha. Nooruzzaman spent his childhood in different parts of the country as a father's job. He spent his school life at Madaripur Islamia High School, Comilla Yusuf School, Sherpur Victoria Academy and Sunamganj Government High School. He passed matriculation from Sunamganj Government High School and higher secondary examination from Sylhet MC College and joined Dhaka University in 1956. In his student days, he was elected sm athletic secretary of Dhaka University. He graduated from Dhaka University in 1959 with honours in history.

Career
As a post-graduate student, he joined the Graduate Course at the Pakistan Military Academy. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in October 1960. After receiving The Kasimon, he was working in Jessore, Dhaka and Chittagong Cantonments. He was brought to Dhaka Cantonment in 1968 as a convict in the Agartala conspiracy case. He was released unconditionally from the case in February 1969 in the face of intense mass agitation. But he was fired.

He used to do business in 1971. He was in Dhaka on March 25. On March 27, he fled Dhaka and went to his area and joined the war. Nooruzzaman was again inducted into the Bangladesh Army. He was promoted to brigadier general in phases. After the liberation war, he was appointed director of the newly formed National Guard in 1972. The force was abolished by the government in late 1975. After the change of pot in 1975, his job was assigned under the Ministry of External Affairs. During his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he worked in Australia, the Philippines, Senegal, Canada and Sweden.

Role in Liberation War
After March 25, 1971, numerous Bengali EPR-Ansar-Police from Dhaka went to Narsingdi district. Nooruzzaman organized some of them in Narsingdi and fought directly with the Pakistani army at some places. He led these wars. Narsingdi fell from April 14-15. He then went to India. The Government of Bangladesh was formed on April 17 and gradually the organizational structure for the liberation war began to be established. Nooruzzaman was appointed assistant sector commander of Sector 3 after the formation of the organisational structure of the Mukti Bahini. Sector Commander Major K M Shafiullah (Bir Uttam, later Army Chief and Major General) was given the responsibility of forming a brigade for the liberation forces regularly in August. Nooruzzaman was then given the charge of sector commander of sector 3. He performed this responsibility with great skill, prudence and bravery. The areas under sector three were Habiganj, Kishoreganj, Narsingdi, Ghazipur district and parts of Brahminbaria and Narayanganj districts. Under the direct and indirect guidance of ANM Nooruzzaman, freedom fighters from Sector 3 carried out numerous operations against the Pakistan Army. Under his overall leadership, several direct wars took place at different places. The Battle of Akhaura is one of them. During the Liberation War, Akhaura railway junction was very important for rail connectivity between Dhaka-Chittagong and Sylhet. It is located three kilometres away from the Indo-Bangladesh border. On the other side is Agartala, the capital of tripura state of India. Connected by road from Akhaura to Agartala. The Defence Positions of the Pakistan Army were at various places in Akhaura. In the final stages of the liberation war, liberation and allied forces jointly attacked there. There was a war there for a few days. A group of freedom fighters from sector three led by Nooruzzaman participated in the war. A group of regular Liberation Forces (11 East Bengal Regiment) freedom fighters created blocking positions on the north side of Akhaura. As a result, roads and railways along the border were blocked for Pakistanis. Another s force team (2nd East Bengal Regiment) freedom fighter carried out the attack from the same direction. A group of freedom fighters led by ANM Nooruzzaman attacked Pakistanis by taking a position northwest of Agartala Airfield. From November 30 to the morning of December 5, there was a fierce battle in Akhaura. Akhaura is freed in the afternoon.

Death
On March 16, 1993, while serving as ambassador of Bangladesh to Sweden, he went to Stockholm. He was buried in a military cemetery in Dhaka.
