ATACMS is an acronym for the full name of this Army TACtical Missile System. It is a ballistic missile system manufactured by the American defense company Lockheed Martin. The missiles, four meters long, 610 millimeters in diameter, and weighing more than one and a half tons, can carry both individual warheads and cluster charges. Adopted by the U.S. military in 1991. ATACMS was first used in the same year during Operation Desert Storm. Then the Americans launched 32 missiles at Iraqi targets. During the Iraq War of 2003-2011, the U.S. Army launched more than 450 such missiles.
