My dad is born in the year of the ox and we always joked that Mum is the Iron fan lady married to the Bull Demon King, both characters from Monkey God. My Chinese New Year full of gatherings around the steamboat, cookies, lion dance and the television watching reruns of Wong Fei Hung or Jackie Chan movies. In Kuala Lumpur we don't have a television. This year we took a few minutes off from our phones and do what we do when there is no technology to distract us.

We start playing.

Us Hokkien bananas don't know Cantonese or Mandarin but this Wong Fei Hong song is a classic.

The bullhead is from the Bantengan culture of Java Island. Witnessing the Bantengan players playing Bantengan 2 years back, I can't help thinking about the lion dances at Chinese New Year. Bantengan is a family affair and this is our first attempt at playing the Banteng together in a family.
